A goal from the Argentine midfielder Franco 'Mudo' Vázquez in the 36th minute of play put Sevilla ahead in the score (1-0) in the break of the game they played against Barcelona in the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán stadium.
The match was very close in the first half, with Barcelona looking to be the protagonist but with a bullish Sevilla who never made things easy, to the point that closed the first half in advantage. In the second, very soon Muriel put the second of Sevilla, four minutes after the restart, and then Ernesto Valverde made Leo Messi enter to try to solve the mess and a goal by Luis Suárez and another of the Argentine, both in the minute 88, prevented the azulgrana defeat.
Ernesto Valverde preferred not to force Messi, who is suffering from muscular ailments, and left him on the bench waiting for the evolution of the game, and also had another absence of weight like the injured Sergio Busquets.
The Champions, just around the corner
The proximity of the first leg of the Champions League, with the visits of Bayern Munich to Sanchez Pizjuán and that of Roma to the Camp Nou, seemed to take more into account the Barcelona, because the Italian Vincenzo Montella put the holder Sevilla, with the return in addition to Jesus Navas after just over a month injured.
The Barça team wanted from the start to show that is not only Messi and pretended to be the protagonist with the ball against an opponent who ran a lot to press.
Luis Suarez warned before the first ten minutes were completed, but his low shot went too cross, although after that scare for the locals came another for the visitors in a haul in which Joaquín 'Tucu 'Correa was slow to put the shot together.
However, that setback redoubled the efforts Sevilla complicate the life of Barca and Luis Muriel nodded badly with the opposition of goal Marc-André Ter Stegen, prelude to another missed header by Correa .
Sevilla then took the lead with plays to the counter that put danger but in the final definition cost dearly to an opponent who also always approached Sergio Rico was looking forward to open the scoring .
In this exchange of blows the first to hit was Franco 'Mudo' Vázquez who after a good pass from Correa inside the small area surprised Ter Stegen with a very soft shot.
The goal came in the 36th minute and from there in the rest Sevilla knew how to hold well to go to the break in advantage but with a whole world still to be disputed.
It gave the impression that Sevilla came out in the second half as if it were losing because it went up and the Colombian Luis Muriel managed to put them in the fourth minute after the restart his team.
Montella left Argentine left-back Gabriel Mercado with a yellow card, and took out Miguel Layún, while Valverde, 2-0, although could be with a 3-0 in a shot by Mudo Vázquez that went out, made Messi enter.
Only with the presence of the Argentine star did the fears of Sevilla get in the way of a little more than half an hour of play and with a Barcelona with all the way to the comeback.
In addition, the locals also forgave the contra, as in several of Muriel u another clear of Éver Banega and that gave rise to the fact that Barça was still alive, although the time passed against his interests before the goal of a rival already very worn physically.
Luis Suárez managed to close the gap with the 2-1 in the 88 and in that same minute Messi tied two and still with time for something else to happen, although it did not happen there.
